Need Topsoil for Your Yard?

If you’ve ever tried to grow grass in a yard with poor soil, you know how frustrating it can be. You can water it, fertilize it, and do everything you’re supposed to do, but sometimes the problem starts right underneath your feet.

Having good soil makes a big difference. Whether you’re putting in a new lawn, filling in a few low spots, or getting your garden ready for spring, choosing the right topsoil is a good place to start.

At Red Barn Mulch & More in Clayton, NC, we carry several types of soil to help with projects big and small. If you’re not sure what kind you need, here’s a little information to help you make the right choice.

What Can You Use Topsoil For?

Topsoil is one of those materials that comes in handy for just about any outdoor project. It’s commonly used when preparing a yard for grass, improving planting areas, or giving an existing landscape a little attention.

Maybe you’re getting ready to install new sod, or perhaps you’ve got a few areas in your yard where the ground has settled and needs some attention. Whatever the project, adding the right soil can help give your grass and plants a better place to grow.

Some common uses for topsoil include:

  • Preparing your yard for new grass seed or sod.
  • Filling in low spots and uneven areas.
  • Building new flower beds and planting areas.
  • Refreshing existing landscape beds.
  • Improving the soil in areas where grass has struggled to grow.

It’s a simple material, but having the right soil can make a big difference in how your project turns out.

Screened or Unscreened Topsoil: Which One Do You Need?

If you’ve been shopping for topsoil, you’ve probably noticed that there are different options available. Two of the most common are screened and unscreened topsoil.

So, what’s the difference?

Screened Topsoil

Screened topsoil has been run through a screening process to remove larger debris, roots, and other unwanted material. The result is a more consistent soil that’s easier to spread and work with.

We generally recommend looking at screened topsoil when you’re preparing an area for grass seed or sod, leveling smaller areas, or working on landscape beds where you want a cleaner finish.

Unscreened Topsoil

Unscreened topsoil hasn’t gone through that same screening process, so it may contain roots, small rocks, and other natural material.

It’s often a practical choice for larger projects where you’re moving a good amount of soil and don’t necessarily need a finely screened product.

Neither option is automatically better than the other. It really comes down to what you’re working on and how you plan to use it.

What About Garden Mix and 50/50 Soil?

Topsoil isn’t the only option when it comes to getting your yard in shape.

If you’re putting together new garden beds or preparing an area for planting, garden mix may be a better fit. It’s intended for planting applications and can help provide a suitable growing environment for your plants.

You may also come across 50/50 soil blends. These are useful for a variety of landscaping and lawn projects where a blended soil material is needed.

The best choice depends on your project, so don’t hesitate to ask if you need help figuring out what to order.

How Much Topsoil Do You Actually Need?

This is something we hear quite often, and it’s a good question. Nobody wants to order too little and have to make another trip, but ordering too much isn’t ideal either.

Topsoil is typically sold by the cubic yard. To get a rough idea of how much you’ll need, measure the length and width of the area and decide how deep you want the soil.

For example, if you’re covering an area that’s 1,000 square feet with 2 inches of topsoil, you’ll need approximately 6.2 cubic yards.

Keep in mind that the amount you need will depend on the condition of your existing ground and the finished depth you’re trying to achieve.
